Aston George Taylor Jr., better known as Funkmaster Flex is a popular hip hop DJ on New York City's Hot 97 radio station, where his weekly show has a 10% market share.citation needed He is known for being the first to release exclusive records in the hip hop world. His show features live mixing and celebrity guests.

History

Funkmaster Flex got his start carrying records for DJ Chuck Chillout in 1986. Chuck was the hip hop dj at 98.7 kiss fm at the time. At the same time flex was the dj for the group Dueces wild. From time to time flex was used as a fillin for chuck chillout. Chuck was fired from wrks in 1989 and was hired at wbls (107.5) in 1990. Chuck was the host and Funkmaster Flex became the dj. Flex was fired late 1990 in favor of ed lover and dr dre and also kid capri.

In 1991 flex began to fill for DJ red alert in the early part of 1991. By this time flex was a household name with club kids in new york city.

In winter of 1992 flex was hired to do a 2 hour rap show at WQHT (hot97) from 12 to 2 am on friday nights. flex slowly got more hours here and there before being offered the night slot (7pm to 12mid). Flex was also a vj at MTV for a couple of years until he was no longer wanted in late 2000. 2001 he was hired by spike tv and MTE to host Ride with Funkmaster flex. The tunnel night club was legendary in the 90's. He played there for over 10 years on sunday nite. He left spike tv to join ESPN to do Car Wars with Funkmaster flex (automotive show) He has released five gold albums. Four on loud records and one on def jam records. The Funkmaster Flex custom car and bike show goes to ten cities with several of the biggest artist in the world. Flex has been know for being the first to release exclusive records on his nightly radio show. While his style is quite unorthodox, he gains respect beause he voices his opinion about the hiphop world and the automotive world any chance he gets.

Flex is also featured on the Rustic Overtones song "Smoke" (on their album ¡Viva Nueva!). In addition, he is mentioned in the Notorious B.I.G. song "Juicy."

Non-musical fame

Flex is also influential in the automotive street scene, with a show on SpikeTV, Ride with Funkmaster Flex, The show is also on Kenya Television Network, Channel O (available via satellite & terrestrial TV throughout Africa) and Channel V (Australia). Other shows of his include All Muscle with Funkmaster Flex on ESPN, and Car Wars with Funkmaster Flex. He founded Team Baurtwell, a custom car club. Flex puts on an annual touring car show, the Funkmaster Flex Celebrity Car Show Tour, which includes the cars of stars such as Wyclef Jean and many others.

The LUGZ shoe company produced the FMF-1 Funkmaster Flex driving shoe, designed by Flex. He has also been a spokesman for Starter athletic gear and Greyhound.

In the videogame ESPN NFL 2K5, Flex is a celebrity adversary and is also unlockable as a free agent fullback in season mode. Flex also appeared in Def Jam Vendetta as a playable fighter.

He also appeared in the sketch "Fisticuff" on Chappelle's Show.
